This is a delayed post, it should’ve been last August 7, 2009.
Today, the country’s leading professional services firm, known for being the best and for hiring only the best in its field is celebrating its 63rd Anniversary, my beloved SyCip, Gorres, Velayo and Co (SGV & Co.).
Since I had my first Accounting subject, I’ve already dreamt of becoming a part of SGV & Co. As a Thomasian, I am so proud to share the same alma mater with two of it’s founders, Washington SyCip and Alfredo Velayo.
It is known in the business world that SyCip and Velayo are more than just business partners, they are bosom buddies. Their friendship started since their first grade and then on, their lives are almost joined to the hip. Their friendship is deeply rooted that even their houses according to sources are only a block apart. They share a life, it’s so touching to hear them both saying that they can’t imagine a life without each other.
Mr. SyCip once shared a story that when he found out that he was making more money than Mr. Velayo did, he decided that whatever it is that they earn must be equally divided, of course, Mr. Velayo agreed and asked why, Mr. SyCip simply answered “Because, we are partners”. But then Mr. SyCip declared, “But I will always be the founder and you will be my co-founder”. The curious Mr. Velayo asked again, “Why?”, “Because I am older than you”, according to Mr. SyCip who is a few days older. This story made me smile how these two successful people managed to remain friends up to this day. As we all know, many friendships are ruined by business and yet these two highly successful people were able to prove the world that real friendships does exist in the business world.
SGV was founded on one of the strongest friendships to ever exist, I guess. Maybe, it’s also the reason why for SGVeans like us, we’ll always treasure SGV not only for training us to be the best in our field but also because of the people we were able to meet in the firm.
I am not the friendly type of person but I can say that I made a lot of really good friends in SGV. Our circle are not necessarily composed of the people with the same likes and dislikes, in fact, we are so diverse. Sometimes, I even ask myself how was I able to make friends with these people. I guess it’s true that strong friendships are built based on the intensity of what you had to go through together. We’re together more than we’re apart during busy seasons. We were there for each other when we need encouragement to go on and also to rejoice on each others triumphs. And since, we work so hard, we play harder. Out of town and out of the country trips with them are really enjoyable. Even just a simple movie night together is something worth reminiscing each time we dine out together. I couldn’t fathom how were able to built such kind of friendship.
Now, that I’m in another office, there are times when I keep on convincing myself that I am just out doing fieldwork because I really miss my friends, my SGV. It’s sometimes so hard to adjust with a new set of people, who despite of being kind-hearted enough doesn’t share the same wavelengths with you, you can’t laugh with the same jokes, can’t relate to the same stuffs.
As the title of this blog goes SGV is a firm built on friendship, no doubt many of us SGVeans found true friends here. When it’s time to leave the firm, leaving these friends behind is the hardest, ‘though I believe that in friendship there are no goodbyes.
Once an SGVean, always an SGVean.
Happy 63rd Anniversary! More Busy Seasons to come.
